The next day I rode my bike, making for an easier pause and closer inspection of this eye-catching specimen. The scale-like leaves are reminiscent of juniper and the flowers, although only superficially and at a glance, of heather. It was abuzz with many different kinds of bees. They were so happy! Any plant that makes bees happy makes me happy.
Not knowing what it was I put my research skills to work. I Googled something like "shrub with juniper-like leaves and pink plume-like flowers." The first hit brought me to Tamarix
The genus is native to Eurasia and Africa and an invasive in the south. Too bad because it's quite pretty! Fortunately, it doesn't seem to be a nuisance here in the north.
